The crew is on the airplane, the airplane is tracked.

To a limited extent, the progress of aircraft in flight can be tracked, and if one knows the crew on board, then obviously can effectively track the crews.

Aircraft over land are located by radar in most developed countries, and this radar data is often centralized to some extent so that third parties (such as airlines) can see the progress of a flight. Airliners equipped with systems like ADS-B also broadcast details of their flights in real time to ground stations, and this also makes it possible to trace a flight. The airliner itself can send reports back to the ground by electronic data link, giving the status of the aircraft in flight, including maintenance information.

Over the ocean and over Third World countries, coverage is much more spotty, Satellite links and radio position reports can give an approximate idea of an airliner’s position, but it’s not as precise as the systems available when the airliner is over land above a developed country.

There are many different ways to get an approximate position for an airliner anywhere in the world. However, as Air France Flight 447 showed, over water and isolated areas, the position is much more uncertain, and is mostly restricted to a large general area, not a precise point on the map.

With my last airline, all captains received a worldwide mobile phone -
The company could call you anywhere you were, voice or text -
    This as of 1998 -

Then in 2002, all captains were given a laptop also working worldwide -
And we had a travel printer – to receive met reports and flight plans -
    Or any operations message -
The first thing in hotel room was to establish "communications" -

Often I would receive a text on my phone – with the ETA of inbound plane -
And delay for departure if applicable – to advise the rest of the crew -
No need for GPS – just regular mobile GSM Quad phone and laptop -
And using the laptop, we were on "Skype" for voice communication -

Even my wife calling on Skype with her shopping list for duty free perfume -
And reminder not to forget my father-in-law favorite cognac bottle -

depends on what type of company and what type of crew ur talking about…….

most fleet vehicles have gps built into them……

other companies and such use cards…look like ID car but have GPS tracker built into them……boat captains and such have these and are under contract to keep them on them at all times…
